John F. and Anna Lee Stacey Scholarship Fund — Program Overview
Purpose
The Stacey Scholarship exists to encourage excellence in the traditional study of form, color, drawing, painting, design, and technique as they relate to a classical artistic tradition. The award follows the explicit provisions of the Staceys’ will; applicants should be committed to classical or conservative modes of fine art.
Eligibility
- Open to U.S. citizens of any race, creed, or color; both men and women; single or married.
- Applicants must be between 18 and 35 years of age.
Award Details
- Individual awards vary each year and range from $500 to $5,000.
- The Committee may, at its discretion, disburse awards in quarterly payments.
Permitted and Excluded Work
- The scholarship is restricted by the will to the fine arts of painting and drawing. Work in other or more practical disciplines is not acceptable except when submitted only as supplementary material to the required painting/drawing work.
- The following types of work do not meet the scholarship’s criteria: sculpture, collage, printmaking, anime, animation, graphic design, illustration, fashion design, and photography.
- IMPORTANT: Only applicants who are skilled in and dedicated to the classical or conservative artistic tradition should apply.
Application Requirements
- Complete the online application and describe your artistic goals and plans.
- Submit up to six (6) examples of paintings/drawings for review. Suggested subject areas (not all are required):
1. Painting from life
2. Drawing from the figure (nude)
3. Composition
4. Landscape
5. Any additional samples you believe appropriate
Use of Funds and Reporting
- Recipients may spend award funds as they see fit to advance their training in conservative/classical art, though the Committee may offer guidance or recommendations.
- Each awardee must provide a brief quarterly report with digital images of current work, and a more detailed final report when the scholarship ends.
Timeline and Contact
- Applications accepted annually from October 1 through February 1.
- Applicants will be notified by email in early April.
- Checks will be mailed to recipients in May.
- Questions or requests for assistance should be sent to scholarship@nationalcowboymuseum.org.
If you meet the age and citizenship requirements and are genuinely committed to the classical/conservative painting and drawing tradition, you are encouraged to apply.
