Angel Calzadilla Memorial Scholarship
Scholarship Sponsored by Miami Police Department
The Do The Right Thing (DTRT) Program, a project of the Miami Police Department, is seeking high school seniors who are about to graduate and have a passion for community service and a desire to become police officers. This initiative is in memory of the late Senior Police Executive Angel Calzadilla, a highly respected officer who passed away in 2011. The Senior Police Executive Angel Calzadilla/Do The Right Thing Police Memorial Scholarship was created to commemorate Officer Calzadilla, who lost his private battle with cystic fibrosis at 48 years old.
The DTRT Program, renowned for acknowledging and incentivizing local young people for their commendable actions and behavior, will award this scholarship to one graduating high school senior each year. The scholarship will provide up to $6,000 towards tuition fees at the City of Miami Police Academy, located in downtown Miami.
Applications for the scholarship should be submitted to the DTRT office at the Miami Police Department by April 15, 2016. The recipient of the scholarship will be announced by June 1, 2016, and they will have a maximum of two years to enroll in the academy.
Jodi Atkison, the Executive Director of Do The Right Thing, spoke highly of Senior Police Executive Calzadilla, who served on the DTRT Board of Directors and spent many years accompanying the program's top student winners to London, England. "He was not only an incredibly compassionate person and an outstanding officer, but he also had a great sense of humor that made him a favorite among our Do The Right Thing kids," Atkison said.
